dheeraIn 2007, Muckaty (Manuwangku), 120km north of Tennant Creek, was nominated as another site to be assessed for nuclear waste storage. Called Manuwangku by Warlmanpa and Warumungu Traditional Owners, this place is far from ‘middle of nowhere’. They maintain a deep spiritual and cultural connection to the area.Supported by people across the NT and Australia, the community has engaged in protests and legal action in the Federal Court to defend their right to live in a clean and safe environment, free of hazardous waste. The photographic narrative ‘Manuwangku, Under the Nuclear Cloud’ is a portrayal of this community’s spiritual connection to their land and resilience in the face of an overwhelming conflict through a common struggle to keep their traditional land free and safe.

July 22-23 (mon):  Chamorro campaigner Vicky Leon visits Brisbane (begins Aus tour)
Brisbane Event details TBA
chamorroVicky will be visiting Australia during the Talisman Saber war games. Guam or Guahan – the southernmost island of the North Mariana islands – a Non-Self Governing territory of the US is the traditional home of the Chamorro people.  With the land 1/3 occupied by US military, the Chamorro people struggle to reclaim their land and keep their culture. Australian military agreements with the US support this occupation of Guahan; for example, US is permitted to conduct bombing practice over the NT that flies out of Guahan.

Calling on all our friends and families of all nations to join us at the shores of Lake Eyre (From July 20 in South Australia) for a music festival to celebrate the survival of the old country and to stand strong to make an action of creative resistance against the apartheid of colonization and destruction caused by multinational mining companies on this land.
From the shores of the Lake, we will follow the underground water across “Australia” in a freedom ride convoy of artists, musicians, activist, Original Sovereigns and Indigenous ambassadors from Australia and West Papua that carry the ancient water collected from the sacred mount springs of Arabunna country, the fire from the old Lake Eyre and ashes from Aboriginal tent embassies across Australia. Support Graeme Dunstan as he faces court. Graeme Dunstan  has been charged with wilful damage of Commonwealth property, which carries a maximum penalty of 12 years jail, plus other related charges for his role in the Rockhampton Tiger Ploughshares action in 2011.
On 19 July 2011 in the midst of the biennial Talisman Sabre US-led military exercises at Shoalwater Bay, Bryan Law, wearing a Bob Katter hat, a dark suit and his Peace Preacher persona, cut a chain, opened a gate, raced across the Rockhampton airport tarmac on his tricycle, and, with a garden mattock, smote a brand new $35 mill Australian Army Tiger Armed Reconnaissance Helicopter.
A classical Catholic Worker Ploughshare action, it was a symbolic strike, a reference to the words of the prophet Isaiah 2:3-4. he words of the prophet Isaiah 2:3-4, that we will study war no more and instead “turn swords into a ploughshares, spears into pruning hooks”.
What was extraordinary about this Ploughshare action and, what made it a world first, was that it was videoed live and appeared on that evening’s WIN Tv News throughout Central Queensland.
